How To Turn Your Man Cave Into a Masculine Space

Just having the word “man” in it, doesn’t make man caves masculine. Many men want their man cave to be a masculine space but are not completely sure how to go about it. That’s a problem I’m going to solve in this article. By the end you should know exactly how you can make your man cave masculine.

To know why a man cave isn’t necessarily masculine, read this post.

We’ve got to look at a couple of questions to answer that question;

  • What is masculinity.
  • Why do you want your man cave to be more masculine?
  • Do I need to be more masculine?
  • What makes a space masculine.

What is masculinity?

To know how to make something more something you need to know something about something.

Ok, that needs some explanation. To know how to make your man cave more masculine, we need to look at what masculinity actually is.

I’ve written a whole article about this question alone so check that out if you’re interested.

A quick recap: “Characteristics and traits that are traditionally thought to be typical of or suitable for men.”

Read this article for more information about masculine traits.

In the end masculinity is not something with clearly defined borders. Perceptions might change slightly over time and masculinity means different things to different people.

Do you feel like you’re not as masculine as you could be? Check out the program “Masculine Core”. It’ll help you awaken the masculine energy that’s waiting inside of you.

Why do you want your man cave to be masculine?

As far as I can see, people have two reasons to want their man cave to be masculine.

  • Feeling comfortable in their man cave.
  • Trying to be more masculine.

These are two different goals although they are not mutually exclusive.

Maybe you feel masculine enough and want a space to feel comfortable in. That’s great and it’s easier than the second goal. Since you’re already comfortable with who you are, you know what you want and you can implement this.

Trying to become more masculine is quite a bit more complicated. And not something that’s going to be an easy problem to solve. It might be simple, but not easy.

It’s a topic that I’ll probably cover later since that’s not really the focus of this article.

Do I really need to be more masculine?

That’s an interesting and slightly complicated question. Let’s unpack this a little bit.

There are a couple of options;

  • You want to be more masculine
  • You want to be more masculine but,
  • You don’t think you need to be more masculine but maybe you do.
  • You’re too masculine to worry about things like this.

If you’re comfortable with who you are, that’s awesome.

Many people would like to change at least some things about themselves. Whatever that something is. I’m a big believer that “stagnation is death”. You should always be trying to improve your life and/or yourself in some way.

Improving yourself doesn’t mean; becoming something you’re not. It means to strive to become the best version of yourself possible.

While there is a spectrum of how masculine men are naturally, in general men skew more masculine than women. So, that means that becoming the best version of yourself is not to become more feminine. It means developing your masculinity.

Becoming a better person means becoming more masculine for many men.

Do you need to become more masculine? That’s up to you. I do think that everyone should be aiming to becoming the best version of themselves though.

What makes a space masculine?

Now we’re getting to the meat of the matter. How can we possibly combine man cave and masculine.

  • A man cave is a space
  • Masculinity is an expression of characteristics and traits.
  • How can you make an inanimate space express human characteristics?

Well, a space is never going to be a leader or courageous since it can’t actually do anything.

So what can you do?

You are the one that wants to be masculine. Having a masculine space does not necessarily make you more masculine. Just like living in an aquarium won’t turn you into a fish.

Let’s take another look at the goals described above;

  • You create a space where masculine people can feel comfortable.
  • You create a space where you can develop your masculinity or certain masculine traits.

It’s of course possible to have a combination of the two.

Either way, it’s not so much that you have to create a space that is masculine but a space that is conducive to maintaining and/or improving your masculinity. A space that helps you become the best you can be.

Things you can do quickly

While changing and improving yourself might take a long time and a lot of work. Here are some things you can change/add to your man cave to make it a little bit easier.

If you’re comfortable with how masculine you are but are just looking for a comfortable space, the things you can do are very similar.

1.      Set some rules

I don’t mean rules for other’s necessarily. Setting rules for yourself is just as important. Think about which goals you want to reach. Then think about how you can get there.

To get where you want to go you’ll likely have to follow a plan and make some sacrifices. Setting rules for yourself will help you to follow your own plan and reach your goals.

Setting punishments for yourself might help you comply to yourself as well.

2.      Have some pictures and/or other items that remind you of your goals.

Have you got a role model you look up to and can draw inspiration from? Put a picture on your wall.

Want a better body? Put up a picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger for example.

Maybe you want to become a better leader? Find a picture of a great leader you admire.

Other items might work for you as well. The point is to have something that reminds you of where you want to go.

3.      Have a blackboard or similar

I’m personally a fan of having a blackboard. It can actually make a pretty good decoration if you’ve got any artistic skills. The other benefit is that you can make easy, visible checklists and reminders.

If you made a plan, you put the steps on the blackboard and you can check them off as you go. It feels good when you can check one step off your board.

Check out this blackboard on Amazon. It’s simple and has a dark rim which looks much better than something you could expect in a school.

4.      Have enough space for friends.

They say you are the average of the 5 people in your life you spend the most time with. Spending more time with people you admire in certain ways will already help you.

Furniture

To hang out with your friends in your man cave, you need some furniture. A place to sit is especially important.

Check out some of the suggestions in these articles;

The main thing to look for is furniture that is comfortable and fits in the atmosphere. I personally feel more comfortable in a more rustic or classic looking room than something ultra modern.

For that purpose it’s best to look for leather and wood furniture with maybe some metal bits here and there.

5.      Decorations

The last part is to have some decorations. This is probably what most of you expected to find when you clicked on this post.

Here are a couple decoration ideas that I think look pretty masculine. Again, masculinity doesn’t mean the same to everyone but I think the items listed here are pretty universal.

  • Posters
  • Signs
  • Pictures (role models or goals)
  • Sports memorabilia
  • Maps
  • Globe
  • Meaningful personal items
